Lagos-based private hospital has carried out West Africa’s first robotic gynaecological surgery, highlighting Nigeria’s growing investment in advanced medical care and reduced medical tourism.
A private hospital in Nigeria has performed what it described as West Africa’s first robotic-assisted gynaecological surgery, marking a milestone in advanced women’s healthcare. The Prostate Clinic (TPC) in Lagos said a 30-year-old woman underwent a robotic procedure to remove a benign ovarian tumour and was discharged the same day.
“This is a deliberate move from male-focused innovation to addressing women’s health challenges using cutting-edge technology,” said Consultant Robotic Surgeon and Medical Director of TPC, Kingsley Ekwueme. He added that robotic surgery reduces recovery time and hospital stay, noting that, “Within six hours, once vital signs are stable, the patient can eat and go home.”
