Nigeria gears up for new stamp duty on electronic transfers in 2026

Starting January 1, 2026, the Nigerian government will implement a new fee structure for electronic transfers, as outlined in the Nigeria Tax Act 2025. This legislation reintroduces stamp duties on various digital transactions, including electronic receipts and certificates, effectively replacing the previous Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL) that was in place since 2020.

Under the new regulations, electronic transfers of N10,000 or more will incur a charge ranging from N75 to N100, depending on the transaction amount. This charge will be borne by the sender, a shift from the previous system where the receiver was responsible for the N50 EMTL fee on similar transactions. While the amount received remains unchanged, the cost of initiating transfers will increase for senders.
