Nigeria becomes first nation to win five consecutive Women’s Afrobasket championships

The triumph further cements Nigeria’s dominance in women’s basketball on the African continent.

D’Tigress of Nigeria have claimed their fifth consecutive Women’s Afrobasket title after defeating Mali 78-64 in the final held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on Sunday.

Led by coach Rena Wakama, the Nigerian team became the first country to win the championship five times in a row, securing automatic qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Berlin, Germany.

The match began with Mali taking a 26-21 lead in the first quarter, but Nigeria leveled the score 41-41 by halftime. D’Tigress pulled ahead in the third quarter with a 61-56 lead and sealed the win by restricting Mali to just eight points in the final quarter.

Their path to the final included a narrow semi-final victory over Senegal, thanks to a strong fourth-quarter performance.

The triumph further cements Nigeria’s dominance in women’s basketball on the African continent.
