Dan Agbese, co-founder of NewsWatch magazine and a prominent figure in modern Nigerian journalism, has passed away at the age of 81. According to a report from TRIBUNE ONLINE, family sources confirmed that Agbese died on Monday morning in Lagos.
Agbese’s career spanned decades, during which he served as editor for notable publications including The Nigeria Standard and The New Nigerian. He also held the position of General Manager at Radio Benue. Until April 2010, he was the Editor-in-Chief of NewsWatch magazine, contributing significantly to the growth and professionalism of Nigerian media.
The late journalist held degrees in Mass Communications and Journalism from the University of Lagos and Columbia University, New York. He was also a prolific author, with acclaimed works including Nigeria Their Nigeria, Fellow Nigerians, The Reporter’s Companion, Style: A Guide to Good Writing, and The Columnist’s Companion: The Art and Craft of Column Writing.
Colleagues and admirers have remembered Agbese for his dedication to truthful reporting and his mentorship of younger journalists. His legacy is widely regarded as a foundation for modern journalistic standards in Nigeria.
