NEW: New Zealand teen passes away after playing the viral “run it straight” game, where two opponents run full speed at each other.
Insanely stupid trend.
The game, which is similar to the ‘Oklahoma Drill’ in football, has one ball carrier and one defender.
The goal of the ball carrier is to run through the defender, while the defender’s goal is to tackle the ball carrier.
19-year-old Ryan Satterthwaite passed away in the hospital due to a “serious head injury” while playing the game.
“We would urge anyone thinking about taking part in a game or event like this to consider the significant safety and injury risks,” said police spokesperson Ross Grantham.
“While this was an impromptu game among friends, not a planned event, this tragic outcome does highlight the inherent safety concerns with such an activity.”
