Facebook has introduced group-specific nicknames and avatars—enabled by group admins—allowing users to post with a separate identity while limiting features like video, sharing, and DMs.
Meta has rolled out a new feature that lets Facebook Group members use a custom nickname and avatar instead of their real profile, offering a middle ground between full anonymity and revealing personal details.
Once enabled by an admin, users can pick a unique name, photo, and background, and their posts, comments, and reactions will show the nickname rather than their main profile, which Facebook says helps people “build a presence in a community without sharing personal details.”
The option appears beside the usual “Post anonymously” toggle, though features like video, content sharing, and private messaging are restricted, and nicknames can only be changed once every two days—with old posts updating to reflect the new name.
