NCDC raises alarm over flood-linked cholera, dengue, yellow fever threats

We urge all state governments to remain alert and intensify surveillance efforts

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has raised a nationwide alert over possible spikes in cholera, yellow fever, and dengue fever due to looming floods. In a statement signed by Director-General Jide Idris, the agency cited Nigerian Meteorological Agency forecasts that Sokoto, Kaduna, Zamfara, Yobe, and other states face high flood risks this July.

“Floodwaters often contaminate our water sources by washing pathogens or germs from soil, animal waste, or overwhelmed sewage systems into rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water,” the NCDC warned.

From June 23 to 29, suspected cholera cases were reported in 34 states, with Zamfara alone recording 32 percent of cases. Edo has confirmed a dengue outbreak, while seven yellow fever cases have emerged across six states.

The NCDC urged the public to practise good hygiene, eliminate stagnant water, and keep vaccinations up to date. “We urge all state governments to remain alert and intensify surveillance efforts,” it said.
