NAFDAC has warned Nigerians about falsified oxytocin injections with forged registration numbers, cautioning that they pose severe risks to mothers and newborns.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has alerted Nigerians to the circulation of falsified oxytocin injections with fake registration numbers. In an alert numbered 028/2025, NAFDAC identified an unregistered product, Gold Vision Oxytocin injection 10IU, allegedly manufactured in China but marketed in Enugu State.
The agency said the injection was uncovered during a risk-based sampling survey by its Post-Marketing Surveillance directorate. Further investigation revealed three more falsified products—A-tocin, Extocin, and Claxitodin injections—all carrying the same forged registration number, A4-9566.
NAFDAC stressed the products are not listed in its official database. It warned, “Using unregistered or falsified oxytocin injections poses serious health risks for both mothers and newborns.” Such products, the agency explained, may contain incorrect doses or harmful contaminants, potentially causing weak contractions, postpartum haemorrhage, or maternal death.
The agency directed zonal directors and state coordinators to withdraw falsified drugs and urged healthcare workers and consumers to remain vigilant and report suspicious products.
