NAFDAC resumes sachet alcohol ban, denies shutting breweries

NAFDAC has resumed enforcement of the sachet alcohol ban, insisting the move protects public health and youths, not to shut down alcohol manufacturers.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has resumed enforcement of the ban on alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and containers below 200ml, dismissing claims of shutting down producers. The agency said the action aligns with a Senate resolution and targets public health concerns, particularly underage drinking.

NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said, β€œThis ban is not punitive; it is protective,” adding that small, cheap and concealable alcohol packs fuel addiction and social vices. She stressed that only sachet and sub-200ml spirit drinks are affected, while larger pack sizes remain approved.
