N3.2bn allocation for EFCC cleaning, meals sparks budget debate

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has proposed spending over N3.2 billion on cleaning, fumigation, meals, and refreshments in the 2026 fiscal year, according to documents from the Budget Office of the Federation. The allocations are part of the presidency section of the 2026 budget presented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to a joint session of the National Assembly on December 19. The breakdown shows N278.6 million for cleaning and fumigation, N722 million for meals and refreshments, N1.02 billion for motor vehicle fuel, and N1.2 billion for generator fuelling.

In addition to these costs, the EFCC has budgeted N170.5 million for drugs and medical supplies, N376.5 million for vehicle and transport equipment maintenance, and N46 million for the upkeep of office furniture. The commission also proposed N1.5 billion for the maintenance of office buildings and residential quarters, alongside N159.8 million for office and IT equipment maintenance, reflecting a significant portion of its recurrent expenditure for the year.

The 2026 appropriation bill includes a total estimated expenditure of N58.18 trillion, with N15.52 trillion allocated for debt servicing, projected revenue of N34.33 trillion, and a deficit of N23.85 trillion to be financed through domestic and foreign borrowing. Public affairs analysts have expressed concern over what they describe as repetitive and excessive recurrent spending by government agencies, with the EFCC’s budget among the provisions drawing scrutiny in the ongoing National Assembly review of the appropriation bill.
