Helen woke with stomach pains at 1.45am in Toronto and felt “an urge to push” before delivering an 8lb 3oz baby into the toilet.
Helen Green, 45, from Bristol, has told how she unexpectedly gave birth in a Holiday Inn bathroom while on a family road trip in Canada — without knowing she was pregnant.
Helen woke with stomach pains at 1.45am in Toronto and felt “an urge to push” before delivering an 8lb 3oz baby into the toilet. Her husband, Michael, called emergency services and both mother and daughter — named Olivia — were taken to hospital.
Helen, who had experienced a cryptic pregnancy, said: “This was such a huge huge shock, and also such a lovely surprise.”
The couple, travelling with their six-year-old daughter Darcy, faced a three-week delay in returning home due to paperwork for Olivia’s passport, adding around £9,000 to costs.
Despite the stress, Helen said: “Ultimately we got an extended holiday and had a really really special time together.”
