Medical Council suspends Euracare Medical Director, two others over Adichie’s son’s death

The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has suspended the Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, Dr Tunde Majekodunmi, along with two other doctors, following findings of medical negligence in the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege, son of renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband Ivara Esege, who died on January 7, 2026, after a brief illness.

Adichie had alleged that her son was taken to Euracare Hospital in Lagos for an MRI scan and insertion of a central line after what began as a common cold developed into a serious infection, but during the procedure, Nkanu was sedated with propofol and reportedly not properly monitored, leading to complications including loss of responsiveness, seizures, and cardiac arrest. “He would be alive today if not for an incident at Euracare Hospital on January 6th,” Adichie stated.

The panel suspended Majekodunmi, anesthesiologist Dr Titus Ogundare, and Atlantis Pediatric Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr Atinuke Uwajeh, barring them from practicing until their cases are determined by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

Additionally, the panel found a prima facie case of professional misconduct against 10 other doctors, including Dr Adeseye Akinsete and Dr Patricia Akintan, while eight others were cleared. The decisions were reached during the panel’s 25th session in Abuja on February 17 and 18, 2026, after reviewing complaints, counter-affidavits, and oral depositions on oath.
