Married Ohio teachers killed in North Carolina crash while dropping son at college

Two Cleveland teachers died in a North Carolina crash while dropping their son at college, leaving two children hospitalized.

Two longtime Ohio teachers were killed in a car crash Friday while taking their eldest son back to college in North Carolina, officials confirmed.

Maria Nunney, 50, and her husband, Donald, 55, were traveling on Interstate 40 near Chapel Hill when their minivan veered off the road, struck trees and slammed into a large tree, the North Carolina Highway Patrol said. Maria died at the scene, while Donald later died at a hospital.

The couple’s two youngest children, ages 9 and 15, were seriously injured, while their eldest son, Noah, 19, was traveling separately and has remained by their side. “Their entire world has changed,” Sgt. Tyler Tucker said.

The Nunneys, both educators in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, were remembered as devoted parents and teachers. “They were just incredible teachers, loving and attentive and committed parents,” union president Shari Obrenski said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
