March 31 deadline for individual tax returns, January 31 for employers — Oyedele

Taiwo Oyedele has warned that both employers and individuals must file tax returns by January 31 and March 31 respectively, as tax deductions alone do not fulfil legal obligations.

Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, has urged Nigerians to comply with statutory tax filing deadlines, stressing that employers must file returns by January 31, while individuals have until March 31. He made the call during a tax compliance webinar organised with the Joint Revenue Board.

Oyedele said compliance levels remain low nationwide, noting that salary deductions do not exempt employees from filing returns. “Many people assume that if they are an employee and the employer has deducted pay, they don’t have to do anything. That is wrong,” he said, adding that efforts are ongoing to simplify the process.
