Man arrested over racist abuse of Bournemouth’s Semenyo at Anfield

Semenyo, who scored twice in the 4-2 defeat, reported that a spectator directed racist remarks at him in the 29th minute.

LIVERPOOL — A 47-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of racially abusing Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo during Saturday’s Premier League clash against Liverpool at Anfield.

Semenyo, who scored twice in the 4-2 defeat, reported that a spectator directed racist remarks at him in the 29th minute. The individual was ejected from the stadium before Merseyside Police confirmed his arrest for a racially aggravated public order offence.

Chief Inspector Kev Chatterton said: “Merseyside Police will not tolerate hate crime of any form … we will be proactively seeking football banning orders, with the club, against those responsible.”

On X, Semenyo wrote: “Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever — not because of one person’s words, but because of how the entire football family stood together.”

Bournemouth captain Adam Smith described the abuse as “totally unacceptable,” adding: “Something needs to be done. Taking the knee isn’t having an effect.”

The Premier League said the incident “will now be fully investigated.”
