Governor Makinde says he is open to reconsidering the renaming of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, following widespread opposition from students and alumni.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, says he is open to reconsidering the controversial renaming of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, following strong backlash from stakeholders. Speaking at the weekend, Makinde said: “We are ready to engage… if you have any superior arguments apart from sentiment.”
Makinde had announced the school would be renamed after its first rector and former governor, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo. The decision sparked protests from students and alumni, who suggested naming a facility after Olunloyo instead.
Makinde urged critics to formally present their positions to the Oyo State House of Assembly, which will deliberate on the proposed name change.
He also referenced past debates over renaming LAUTECH, saying he is willing to be persuaded by stronger arguments.
At the same event, new governing councils for five tertiary institutions were inaugurated, and the governor promised solutions to ongoing funding challenges, including rising wage costs.
“This is an administration that listens,” Makinde said, promising quality improvements in the state’s education sector.
