Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson has endorsed a book promoting the use of chlorine dioxide—a chemical used in bleach and disinfectants—as a treatment for cancer, autism, COVID-19, and other diseases.
The book, The War on Chlorine Dioxide by Dr. Pierre Kory, claims a global conspiracy is suppressing the chemical’s medical uses. Johnson described the book as “a gripping tale of corruption and courage that will open eyes and prompt serious questions.”
Chlorine dioxide is primarily a disinfectant and is not approved for use in humans. Dr. Joe Schwarcz of McGill University called Kory’s theory “all lunacy” and warned, “At high concentrations, chlorine dioxide is not a cure for anything, it is a poison.” Despite these warnings, Johnson confirmed to ProPublica that he had read the book and endorsed it, continuing his history of supporting unproven medical treatments.
Johnson has previously promoted unfounded health claims, including ivermectin for COVID-19 and false vaccine dangers. He and Kory wrote a 2022 Fox News op-ed opposing a California bill that would strip doctors of licenses for spreading COVID-19 misinformation.
Johnson’s latest endorsement echoes past controversial statements, drawing comparisons to President Trump’s infamous suggestion to inject bleach during the pandemic.
