Africa is accelerating its shift into artificial intelligence, with Microsoft’s 2025 AI Diffusion Report showing strong but uneven adoption across countries. The report notes that “more than 1.2 billion people worldwide have used AI tools,” making it the fastest-spreading technology in history. Zambia leads the continent with the only user share above the global 15 percent average, while South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Morocco follow as emerging regional leaders.
Despite this progress, many African nations still face barriers such as weak infrastructure, electricity shortages, low digital literacy, and limited language support. The report highlights that AI uptake depends heavily on connectivity and economic readiness, noting that “nearly four billion people globally still lack the basic requirements needed to use AI tools.” Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania and others remain below 10 percent adoption, underscoring the continent’s uneven transition into the AI-driven economy.
