Lawsuit claims Meta can access users’ WhatsApp messages

Meta is defending a new lawsuit alleging it can secretly access WhatsApp messages, a claim the company dismissed as “categorically false.”

A lawsuit filed in San Francisco alleges Meta can “store, analyze, and access virtually all of WhatsApp users’ purportedly ‘private’ communications.” International plaintiffs claim whistleblowers revealed that Meta employees can bypass encryption to access data. The suit argues the tech giant defrauds users by misrepresenting the platform’s security despite its marketing as a private messaging service.

Meta denied the allegations, calling the legal action “a frivolous work of fiction.” Spokesperson Andy Stone told Bloomberg, “Any claim that people’s WhatsApp messages are not encrypted is categorically false and absurd.” The company maintains that WhatsApp has utilized the Signal protocol for a decade to ensure only senders and recipients can read messages.
