Lagos police say no shots were fired during an anti-demolition protest, attributing reported injuries to teargas dispersal and denying claims of gunfire.
The Lagos State Police Command has denied claims that officers shot at residents protesting demolitions, saying no firearm was discharged during Wednesday’s march to the House of Assembly. Protesters from Makoko, Oworonshoki, Owode-Onirin and Oko Baba demanded compensation, relocation plans and justice over past demolitions.
Tensions rose after demonstrators were denied entry and teargas was used, affecting journalists and others, with one protester injured. Police Commissioner Jimoh Olohundare said, “No gun was fired. I was there,” adding that injuries likely occurred during dispersal and insisting efforts were made to resolve the situation peacefully.
