Lawmakers in Lagos State plan to spend N55.4 billion on residential quarters and beautification of the Assembly complex in the 2026 budget, far outweighing allocations for community infrastructure projects.
A review of the approved 2026 Lagos State budget by SaharaReporters has shown that members of the House of Assembly intend to commit N55.4 billion to the construction of permanent residential quarters and the beautification of the Assembly complex. According to the budget breakdown, N35.4 billion is earmarked for the “construction of Permanent Legislative Quarters for Honourable Members of the Assembly, processing of document, Architectural drawing design, Structural Engineering, Soil Test, Pile work and Consultancy Services etc.”
Further analysis of the budget revealed that an additional N20 billion is allocated for the “construction of new fence and drainage channels at the Permanent Legislative Quarters, covering of gutters with slabs as well as land scapping and beautification of the assembly Complex and Legislative Quarters.” In total, the allocations bring planned spending on the legislative quarters and related beautification projects to N55.4 billion.
In contrast, only N16 billion was budgeted for “MDA executed commuity based Capital Infrastructural Intervention.” Meanwhile, earlier SaharaReporters’ reviews of Lagos State budget performance documents for the full year 2025 and the last quarter of the year showed that billions of naira were spent by lawmakers on other expenditures, including N4.5 billion for the purchase of forty 50KVA backup generators and an additional N3.6 billion on the acquisition of properties in Lagos and Abuja.
