Lagos govt reports 8,692 domestic violence cases in one year

Lagos recorded 8,692 domestic and sexual violence cases in one year, with officials pledging stronger interventions.

The Lagos State Government says it is alarmed by the rising incidence of domestic and sexual violence, recording 8,692 cases between August 2024 and July 2025.

Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, SAN, represented by Solicitor-General Olanrewaju Oyenuga, disclosed this during a briefing in Ikeja. He said domestic violence topped the list with 3,685 incidents, followed by defilement (243), child abuse (244), rape (99), and sexual harassment (48).

Pedro noted that survivors, aged between 18 months and 79 years, mostly struggle with trauma, anxiety, and depression. “These statistics reveal SGBV as a silent epidemic eroding community well-being… Lagos will not relent until survivors are fully supported and perpetrators are held accountable,” he said.

The state reported 402 rescue operations, 146 free legal representations, 30 shelter provisions, 140 convictions, and support for high-risk survivors through the Domestic and Sexual Violence Trust Fund.
