24 abducted Kebbi schoolgirls regain freedom

Twenty-four schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, Kebbi State, have been rescued following intense security operations involving police, military, and directives from President Tinubu and COAS Shaibu.

Security sources on Tuesday confirmed that the 25 schoolgirls abducted in Kebbi State have been rescued, though details of the operation remain sketchy and an official announcement is expected later tonight.

The girls were taken on November 17 when bandits attacked their school, killing an official and injuring a security guard, with two students earlier escaping “as they were being led into the bushes” according to a BBC report quoting Hussaini Aliyu of Danko Wasagu LGA.

After the abduction, authorities released the names of the victims and deployed additional police tactical units, military personnel and vigilante groups, with Police Commissioner Bello Sani saying the joint team was combing forests and escape routes in a coordinated mission. Army chief Waidi Shaibu directed troops to leave no stone unturned, while President Bola Tinubu ordered Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle to relocate to Kebbi “to monitor security efforts to secure the release of the abducted students.”
