A case of alleged medical negligence has thrown a Kano family into mourning after Aishatu Umar reportedly died on Monday at about 1 a.m., following months of unbearable abdominal pain caused by a pair of scissors allegedly left inside her body during surgery at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center in September 2025.
The incident was disclosed by her brother-in-law, Abubakar Mohammed, who stated that Aishatu Umar is survived by her husband and five children. “She was living in Kano when she fell ill a few months ago and underwent surgery at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center in September,” Mohammed said.
According to the family, Aishatu suffered persistent severe abdominal pain for four months, with repeated hospital visits resulting only in pain relievers, until tests two days before her death revealed the surgical instrument inside her body. “Just two days ago, tests and scans were finally conducted, revealing that a pair of scissors had been left inside her body during the September operation,” Mohammed disclosed.
Efforts were reportedly made to prepare her for corrective surgery, but she passed away before the procedure could be performed. “Efforts were being made to perform a corrective surgery yesterday, but her time had run out, and she passed away,” Mohammed said.
The family has described the incident as a “clear case of gross professional negligence,” questioning how such a critical instrument could be forgotten during surgery. “Is this not pure negligence? Truly, every soul has its appointed time, but how can professional doctors forget scissors inside a patient?” he asked. They are calling on the Kano State Government and relevant health regulatory bodies to urgently investigate the matter and ensure accountability. “We call on the Kano State Government to investigate and take action. We call on the health regulatory bodies to investigate and take action. We demand justice for Aishatu Umar,” the family said.
As of reporting, the management of the Abubakar Imam Urology Center and Kano State health authorities had not issued an official response to the allegations.
