Kano suspends three health workers over woman’s death after surgery

The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has suspended three health personnel linked to the death of a woman, Aishatu Umar, following a surgical procedure at the government-owned Abubakar Imam Urology Center, where scissors allegedly used during the operation were forgotten inside her body. Officials confirmed that a preliminary and transparent investigation established that the incident occurred at the facility, sparking public outrage and renewed concerns over patient safety in state hospitals.

In a statement issued by the Board’s Executive Secretary, Dr Mansur Mudi Nagoda, through the Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, the Board said: “Following a preliminary and transparent investigation ordered by the Executive Secretary, Dr Mansur Mudi Nagoda, the Board has established that the unfortunate incident involving the late Aishatu Umar did occur at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center. In line with its commitment to accountability, professionalism, and patient safety, the Board has outrightly suspended three (3) personnel directly involved in the case from clinical activities with immediate effect. Furthermore, the matter has been formally referred to the Kano State Medical Ethical Committee for further investigation and appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with existing laws, professional guidelines, and ethical standards.” The statement added that, “The Kano State Hospitals Management Board extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late Aishatu Umar… and reassures the public that it will not condone negligence in any form.”
