Iyabo Obasanjo declares for Ogun governorship: ‘I’m going to win’

Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has announced her intention to run for the Ogun State governorship, asserting confidence in her victory and pledging to improve the lives of residents.

Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, declared on Wednesday that she is set to become the next governor of Ogun State. “I’m going to win,” she told listeners during an appearance on the radio programme Frontline on Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese-Ijebu. Obasanjo recently returned to active politics after a 15-year hiatus, joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to contest in the forthcoming governorship election.

The former senator, who represented Ogun Central Senatorial District from 2007 to 2011, previously served as Ogun State Commissioner for Health and later pursued an academic career in the United States, rising to the rank of professor. She lost her re-election bid in 2011 to Senator Gbenga Obadara of the then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) before stepping away from politics for over a decade.

Reiterating her ambition on the programme, Obasanjo said her candidacy is motivated by the need to bridge governance “gaps” in Ogun State and positively impact the lives of residents. “The position I’m going to run for is governor, and I believe it fits the skills I bring to the table. As Ogun citizens, I hope that when I’m governor, I will touch your life either directly or indirectly in a way that will improve your lives,” she said.
