ISWAP attacks military base in Borno, soldiers feared dead

An overnight ISWAP attack on a military base in Kaga LGA, Borno State, left several soldiers feared dead and others injured as reinforcements reportedly hit landmines.

An overnight attack by the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) on a Nigerian military base in Ngamudu, Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State, has left many soldiers feared dead. Sources told BusinessDay that the terrorists stormed the Super Camp along the Maiduguri-Damaturu highway around 2 a.m. on Friday and opened fire on soldiers. “The terrorists came around 2 a.m. and started shooting sporadically. The attack lasted about one hour and many soldiers may have lost their lives. Unfortunately, the wounded soldiers have been taken to Damaturu for medical attention,” a source said.

The military has since blocked the highway while securing the area. Another security source confirmed that reinforcement troops from Benishek and Mainok stepped on landmines during response operations. Motorists remain stranded as security forces conduct clearance operations. Details of casualties are yet to be officially released.
