Islamic Council rejects US call to end Sharia in Nigeria

The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria has rejected US calls to end Sharia practice, insisting it is constitutionally protected and not subject to external pressure.

The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has rejected calls by US lawmakers to end Sharia practice in Nigeria, describing the move as misinformed and an affront to national sovereignty. In a statement, Secretary General Nafiu Ahmad said Sharia, practiced in 12 northern states since 1999, remains a constitutional right tied to freedom of religion.

“No power or authority can arrogantly make Muslims relinquish its practice in response to external pressure, misinformation, or political intimidation,” the council said. It also dismissed claims of a “Christian genocide,” arguing that insecurity affects Muslims and Christians alike and that portraying violence as religious persecution is “inaccurate and unhelpful.”
