Investigative reports have exposed discrepancies and delayed uploads on the INEC IReV portal following the FCT elections, raising new questions about the reliability of Nigeria’s electronic result transmission system.
In a report highlighting potential transparency gaps, the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) has identified significant discrepancies in the result sheets uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Result Viewing (IReV) portal for the February 21, 2026, FCT Area Council elections. According to the investigation, Form EC8A sheets the primary records from polling units showed visible cancellations and modifications, such as in the Road Safety Quarters Polling Unit in Abaji, where the APC’s score was altered alongside changes to the PDP and ADC totals.
Discrepancies were also noted in the Rimba Ebagi ward, where the total valid votes were recorded as “236” in figures but written as “Two hundred sixty three” in words. Despite the 2026 Electoral Act’s mandate for immediate digital transmission, the report found that 24 hours after polls closed, several wards had yet to achieve full compliance, with Kuje and Rimba Ebagi still missing expected results on Sunday evening. While INEC has declared the APC winner in five of the six area councils, these documented “questionable results” have fueled concerns among civil society groups regarding the integrity of the system ahead of the 2027 general elections.
