INEC cautions parties against early 2027 election campaigns

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned political parties and aspirants against premature campaigning ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating such actions breach the Electoral Act.

INEC Chairman’s Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, told PUNCH on Monday that the commission is yet to release the official timetable or schedule for the elections. His remarks followed concerns over growing political posters and verbal jabs among politicians.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission has not released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Elections,” Oyekanmi said. “To that extent, party primaries have not been held and no political party has nominated candidates.”

Citing Sections 94(1) and 95(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, he stressed that campaigns can only begin 150 days before polling day and must follow INEC guidelines.

He added, “Any open campaign or canvassing for votes… is not only inappropriate but a violation of the Electoral Act.”
