Nigerian Grammy Award–winning artiste Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, has sparked controversy after declaring that he is bigger than Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Wizkid made the remarks on Tuesday amid an escalating public feud with Fela’s son, Seun Kuti, posting a series of insulting messages on his Instagram stories and X in which he mocked Seun and claimed to have surpassed Fela in status.
The outburst followed Seun Kuti’s recent criticism of comparisons between Wizkid and his late father, which he described as disrespectful and rooted in ignorance. During an Instagram livestream, Seun warned Wizkid’s fanbase, popularly known as Wizkid FC, to stop portraying the singer as a modern-day Fela, insisting that such comparisons diminish the legacy of the Afrobeat legend and reflect a lack of understanding of his historical impact.
Seun further accused Wizkid’s fanbase of promoting disrespectful online rivalries that are damaging the Nigerian music industry. He said Fela fought for freedom during his lifetime, unlike what he described as present-day social media conflicts, adding that excessive fan loyalty has strained relationships among artistes and discouraged collaboration within the industry.
