‘I’m a Christian but I use charms’ — Sunday Igboho says embracing juju doesn’t contradict his Christianity

Yoruba self-determination campaigner Sunday Igboho has said he practices traditional spirituality alongside Christianity, insisting that the use of charms does not contradict his faith.

Yoruba self-determination campaigner, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has declared that he practices traditional spirituality alongside his Christian faith. Igboho made the disclosure while addressing a council of traditional rulers, where he spoke openly about his religious background, early life and spiritual beliefs.

The activist maintained that embracing charms does not conflict with his Christianity. “I am a Christian, but I use charms. I do all religions. Even Islamic father, Muideen Ajayi Bello is a Muslim, I am a Christian. I was born in church, but I do charms. I was trained in the act.

“Everyone knows my father is a babalawo in Modakeke,” he said.

Igboho, who hails from Igboho in Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State, later grew up in Modakeke, Osun State, under the guidance of his father. His agitation for a Yoruba nation and his efforts to rid the South-West of killer Fulani herders drew the anger of the Nigerian government, placing him at the centre of political and security controversies in recent years.
