Ijebuland Stool: Kuye opens up on ‘Awujale-elect’ claims

Prince Ademorin Kuye has denied allegations that he is parading himself as Awujale-elect, insisting he is not desperate to ascend the throne and will respect established succession laws.

Ademorin Kuye, a contender for the vacant stool of the Awujale of Ijebuland, has declared that he is not desperate to emerge as the next Awujale, dismissing allegations that he has been parading himself as Awujale-elect. Kuye, who represents Somolu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, described the claims by some princes and princesses of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House of Ijebu-Ode as baseless and malicious.

In a statement signed by Barr. Kunle Johnson Adebajo on behalf of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, the group accused Kuye of presenting himself as Awujale-elect and allegedly commissioning a female ‘waka’ singer to produce a song celebrating his purported selection. The statement warned that such action was unlawful and capable of destabilising Ijebuland. “We want to state without equivocation that the action of the said Hon. Kuye is illegal and capable of causing chaos and unrest in Ijebuland,” the statement read in part. The group also called on the Ogun State Government to intervene and compel Kuye and his supporters to desist from actions described as provocative.

Reacting in a telephone interview, Kuye, a lawyer of 37 years, maintained that he would not engage in any act that breaches extant chieftaincy and customary laws guiding the emergence of the Awujale of Ijebuland. He reiterated that he would respect due process and would not be involved in anything capable of undermining established succession procedures.
