Renumeration for Buhari’s family
Following the passing of Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari, many Nigerians are curious about the benefits his family is entitled to under Nigerian law.
Here’s what the law (Remuneration of Former Presidents and Heads of State
[and other Ancillary Matters] Act) says:
The immediate family of a deceased former Head of State is entitled to ₦1,000,000 annually, which is to be paid in quarterly installments of ₦250,000.
This allowance is specifically designated for:
The upkeep of the surviving spouse and the education of the children, up to the university level
However, there’s a condition. If the spouse of the deceased former President remarries, she forfeits the entitlement. In other words, the widow only continues receiving the benefit if she remains unmarried.
These provisions aim to ensure that the family of a former national leader doesn’t fall into hardship after their loved one’s service to the country ends in death.
