Residents around Yar Marina, Sokoto, have expressed growing unease following the transfer of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to the Sokoto Central Correctional Centre after a Federal High Court sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Locals said increased security patrols, checkpoints and restricted movement have disrupted daily life near the prison, located close to the Sultan’s Palace and major police offices. Journalist Kabiru Gobirawa said, “It is our hope and prayers that the IPOB leader’s presence… will not trigger another wave of fear and tension.”
Traders and residents said business continues under heightened anxiety. Alhaji Sani Alfa recalled, “We woke up to heavy deployment around the prison,” while Fatima Mai Masa noted constant security movements, especially at night. Kanu recently received lawyer Dr Maxwell Opara, who said, “Our concern is access,” questioning the logistics of the relocation.
The Sokoto State government denied claims that Governor Ahmed Aliyu accompanied Abia Governor Alex Otti during a visit to Kanu.
