The Diaspora Council of Nigerian Youths (DCNY) has criticised Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s approach in seeking redress over her suspension from the Senate, describing it as damaging to Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
The Council raised its concerns during an emergency meeting held at the Congress Hotel in Chicago, where representatives from various countries gathered to deliberate on the controversy surrounding the senator’s recent suspension by the Nigerian Senate.
Speaking at the meeting, the Convener and President of the DCNY, Comrade Yinka Gbadebo, expressed the displeasure of Nigerian youths in the diaspora over what he described as the senator’s sensational handling of the issue.
“We express our profound displeasure over the sensationalism that has characterized Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s public statements,” he said. “Her willful violation of Senate rules regarding sitting arrangements is the reason for her suspension, not her unsubstantiated claims of sexual harassment.”
The group accused the senator of engaging in what it called a “global campaign” aimed at discrediting the Nigerian Senate and, by extension, the country’s democratic framework. According to the Council, her media engagements and remarks to international organisations, where she described Nigeria as a lawless country, have triggered outrage among Nigerians living abroad.
