Ghana footballer Frimpong killed in armed attack on team bus

Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpong was killed after armed robbers attacked Berekum Chelsea’s team bus, prompting calls for improved security in domestic football.

Dominic Frimpong, a winger for Berekum Chelsea, has been killed following an armed robbery attack on the team’s bus, according to the Ghana Football Association. The incident occurred on the Goaso–Bibiani road as the team returned from an away match against Samartex.

“On our way back to Berekum from ⁠Samreboi our team bus was attacked by a group of armed robbers who blocked the road to prevent our passage,” the club said. “Masked men welding guns and assault rifles started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse. The players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover.”

The GFA confirmed the death of the 20-year-old, describing it as a major loss to Ghanaian football. “This tragic incident is not only a ⁠huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole,” the association said, adding that security for teams traveling for domestic matches would be strengthened.
