President Mahama has dismissed Chief Justice Torkornoo over alleged abuse of office, though she denies the charges.
Ghanaian President John Mahama has dismissed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo over alleged abuse of office, the presidency confirmed on Monday. The decision follows weeks of public scrutiny and mounting pressure from civil society groups calling for accountability in the judiciary.
According to an official statement, the president acted “in the best interest of the nation and the integrity of the judiciary.” The statement further noted that the dismissal was based on findings from a special committee tasked with investigating allegations of misconduct against the chief justice.
Torkornoo, who was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2019 and became chief justice in 2023, has denied any wrongdoing. “I have served this nation with integrity and will continue to defend my record,” she said in response to the president’s action.
Legal analysts say the dismissal could spark debate over judicial independence in Ghana. A successor is expected to be named in the coming days.
