German mayor-elect stabbed at home, children questioned

Germany’s newly elected Herdecke mayor, Iris Stalzer, is fighting for her life after a stabbing attack that police say may involve close family members.

The newly elected mayor of Herdecke, Iris Stalzer, is in critical condition after being stabbed multiple times at her home in western Germany. Stalzer, 57, a Social Democrat who won election last month, reportedly dragged herself inside after the attack, which police said may involve close family members.

Her 15-year-old son and 17-year-old daughter were taken in for questioning, though the motive remains unclear. The mayor-elect was airlifted to a hospital following the assault. German Chancellor Fredrick Merz condemned the incident as “an abominable act,” urging a full investigation.

The attack comes amid a growing wave of political violence, with about 60% of German politicians reporting having faced violence or threats.
