Gbajabiamila launches free bus scheme for students, elderly in Surulere

When buses aren’t serving schools, other residents can ride at 25% discounted rates. The project also prioritizes women with children, PWDs, and has directly created 100 jobs.

Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, launched the GbajaRide free transport scheme in Surulere on Saturday, aimed at schoolchildren and the elderly. The initiative, which unveiled 33 buses, offers free rides to students and residents aged 65 and above.

“This is good stress for me,” Gbajabiamila said, affirming his continued service to Surulere. The scheme, he added, aligns with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and could mean the difference between school success or failure.

For three months, Gbajabiamila will fund salaries, fuel, insurance, and repairs before the scheme becomes self-sustaining.

Officials praised the initiative’s social impact. LAMATA and Lagos’ education commissioner said it would reduce transport costs and help tackle learning poverty.

“This is just the beginning,” said Surulere Council Chairman Sulaimon Bamidele-Yussuf.
