INEC has approved the registration of two new political parties, increasing Nigeria’s total to 21 ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has approved the registration of two new political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, raising the total number to 21. INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), announced the decision on Thursday in Abuja during the commission’s first consultative meeting with political parties in 2026.
Amupitan said the Democratic Leadership Alliance met all statutory requirements, while the Nigeria Democratic Congress was registered in compliance with a Federal High Court order. He noted that the approvals followed the screening of 171 associations seeking registration, adding that the newly registered parties aim to deepen democratic participation.
