The Federal Road Safety Corps, Zamfara Sector Command, has warned parents against overloading schoolchildren on motorcycles and tricycles, citing the danger it poses to lives.
Sector Commander Aliyu Maaji gave the warning on Friday in Gusau, stating that offenders would be apprehended as part of efforts to reduce road crashes involving schoolchildren.
Maaji said overloading had led to casualties and, in some cases, deaths among schoolchildren. He cited a recent crash involving a motorcycle carrying seven pupils, noting, “Although no deaths occurred, the injuries were severe.” He added that FRSC personnel had been strategically deployed around schools to monitor compliance.
The sector commander said the corps was working with the Ministry of Justice to establish a mobile court for effective enforcement of traffic laws.
He also announced continued advocacy visits to traditional and religious leaders, saying, “If all hands are on deck, sensitisation will reach everyone, compliance with traffic laws will improve, and road crashes will reduce.”
