Images on X, which are yet to be verified, also appear to show Maduro sitting on a chair, surrounded by agents.

He appears handcuffed with his hands in front of him, and posing with a thumbs-up sign. In another, he appears to be standing outside a plane, shortly after landing in New York.

In both those pictures, he is seen wearing the same light blue hoodie, along with dark blue sweatpants, white socks and sliders.

An official White House account has shared footage of Nicolas Maduro in custody on US soil.

It shows the captured Venezuelan president in handcuffs, being escorted through corridors by Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents.

“Perp walked,” the caption from the Rapid Response profile on X read.

At the end of the video, Maduro is heard to say what sounds like “Happy New Year”

Local reports in New York suggest Maduro has now arrived at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.

He is due to be held there until a Manhattan federal court appearance, potentially as early as Monday.

Earlier, Maduro arrived in New York by helicopter and briefly visited the DEA headquarters before being taken to the detention centre.
