FMC Abuja denies negligence in snakebite death case

The Federal Medical Centre, Abuja, has denied social media allegations of negligence following the death of Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene from a snake bite. Management stated that the medical team acted promptly upon her January 31 arrival, administering emergency care including oxygen and polyvalent anti-snake venom. The hospital described the death as a “tragic loss” involving severe neurotoxic complications.

The hospital dismissed claims that anti-venom was unavailable or treatment delayed. According to Dr. Bioku Muftau, the patient’s condition deteriorated during an attempted transfer to intensive care. The statement noted, “Our team immediately commenced cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other life-saving measures,” asserting that staff acted with professionalism. Officials urged the public to rely on verified information over speculation.
