The Federal Government has issued a flood alert as heavy rainfall is forecasted from July 16 to 20, 2025, with potential risks in 11 states. A joint warning from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) highlighted that the expected downpour could lead to flash floods and riverine flooding, especially in low-lying areas.
States at risk include Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Edo, Kogi, and Benue. Residents have been urged to avoid flood-prone routes and follow safety directives.
“The expected volume of rain over the next few days could overwhelm drainage systems, displace communities, and disrupt transport and agricultural activities,” the agencies said.
Authorities have instructed state and local governments to begin emergency preparedness and awareness campaigns. Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is stockpiling relief supplies and positioning rapid response teams. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed and report flooding signs immediately.
