A devastating fire tore through parts of Lagos’s Alaba International Market on Tuesday evening, destroying numerous shops and causing significant loss and anguish among traders, who watched helplessly as fire services struggled to contain the blaze.
A massive inferno swept through sections of the Alaba International Market on Tuesday evening, leaving a trail of destruction and sparking chaos among hundreds of traders.
The fire destroyed numerous shops and warehouses, forcing some devastated traders to watch in anguish while others desperately attempted to retrieve their goods. Thick black smoke was seen rising into the sky during the raging incident.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service deployed officials to the scene, who battled for hours to bring the large blaze under control.
Eyewitnesses reported the fire quickly spread through several locked stores. Adding to the distress, some traders accusing market security personnel of responding too slowly when the fire started. Many traders wept over their losses, which are expected to total millions of naira. The cause of the fire remains unknown as authorities begin an investigation.
