The Federal Government has released an official and revised list of approved subjects for Primary, Junior, and Senior Secondary levels, aiming to reduce curriculum overload and promote skill acquisition through streamlined core and trade options.
The Federal Government has officially announced the list of approved subjects for Basic (Primary and Junior Secondary) and Senior Secondary education. The overhaul follows extensive consultation with the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) and key examination bodies, and is set to take effect in the 2025/2026 academic session.
Primary students in P1–P3 will now study between 9 and 10 subjects, while those in P4–P6 will take 10 to 12, including core subjects like English, Mathematics, Nigerian History, and options such as French and Arabic. Junior Secondary pupils (JSS1–3) will study 12 to 14 subjects, featuring English, Maths, Digital Technologies, Business Studies, and trade options such as Solar Installation, Fashion Design, Livestock Farming, Cosmetology, and GSM Repairs.
At Senior Secondary level, students will take 8 to 9 subjects focused on five compulsory areas: English Language, General Mathematics, Citizenship and Heritage Studies, Digital Technologies, and one trade subject. They will also select electives from sciences, humanities, business, arts, or vocational fields.
“The reforms aim to make Nigeria’s education relevant, flexible, and skills-driven,” NERDC said, urging stakeholders to disregard “fake and unauthentic lists” in circulation.
