FG releases approved subjects for basic, senior secondary schools

The Federal Government has unveiled the official subjects for Nigeria’s revised curriculum, warning against fake lists and pledging immediate teacher training for smooth implementation.

The Federal Government has released the approved list of subjects for Nigeria’s revised Basic and Senior Secondary Education Curriculum, cautioning stakeholders to disregard fake versions circulating. In a statement signed on September 8, 2025, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Professor Salisu Shehu, said: “We fervently call on all critical stakeholders to disregard any other fake and unauthentic list that is at variance with the authentic and approved list provided above.”

The reforms, undertaken under the Federal Ministry of Education’s National Education Sector Reform Initiatives, are aimed at reducing curriculum overload and improving “positive learning outcomes.” Implementation is scheduled to begin with each three-year education cycle starting from Primary 1, Primary 4, JSS1, and SS1.

While some teachers and parents criticised the government for lack of consultation, the NERDC assured that nationwide sensitisation and teacher training will commence immediately to ensure smooth adoption.
