The Federal Government has inaugurated a ₦40 billion closed-circuit television (CCTV) control centre for the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, following major rehabilitation works on the structure. Speaking at the inauguration on Sunday, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, said the project was implemented after the administration assumed office in 2023 and identified serious structural concerns on the bridge.
Umahi said the Third Mainland Bridge, alongside Carter and Iddo bridges, was in poor condition when the current government took over, necessitating comprehensive assessments and repairs both above and below water level. He explained that President Bola Tinubu approved the total rehabilitation of the bridge, including the replacement of expansion joints, adding that the completed works have improved driving conditions and extended the lifespan of the infrastructure.
The minister noted that the CCTV system, first announced in 2025, is aimed at enhancing safety and security on the bridge. According to him, the control centre will be used to monitor traffic in real time, curb dangerous driving, prevent suicide attempts and enforce speed limits, with security personnel deployed to observe live footage and respond to incidents as they occur.
