Festive frenzy: Lagos kicks off ‘Detty December’ cash cow

Lagos has launched its annual “Detty December” festivities, attracting the Nigerian diaspora and international tourists for major concerts and parties, which serves as a crucial economic boost for the city’s hospitality and tourism sectors despite the country’s economic and security challenges.

Lagos, Nigeria — Nigeria’s annual, cash-splashing “Detty December” festivities have officially begun in Lagos, drawing massive crowds of Nigerian diaspora members and international tourists. The holiday period, described as a “cultural pilgrimage” by event organizer Deola Art Alade, sees hotels fully booked and final preparations for major festivals and concerts underway. Despite the dual challenges of a recent state of emergency over kidnappings and brutal inflation, the nation’s economic capital is set for non-stop music and parties.

The month-long frenzy is a significant economic boost, injecting millions into the local tourism, restaurant, and hotel sectors. Last year, the Lagos state authorities estimated the celebrations brought in over $71.5 million in government revenue. The government, partnering with the organizers who trademarked the term in 2019, aims to transform the event from a “social trend to a structured national asset,” according to Culture Minister Hannatu Musa Musawa.
